Red and Black Drum

Hatteras is home to the world record red drum, which was caught in 1943 and weighed over 90 pounds. The rich waters of the Pamlico Sound harbors some of the best red drum fishing in the world. In the spring the big 20-40 pound citation size fish start to show up first followed by the puppy drum in the shallow grass flats. Most of our red drum fishing is done with light tackle and sight casting. We also bait fish for them on days when the water is dirty and we can’t see them. There are days we find massive schools of drum just cruising the shallow grass and sandbars and casting buck tails and spoons to them produces the best results.
